Chapter Four

THE MATTRESS IN the cell was more comfortable than I’d expected, and I had slept well. Of course, that only made me worry whether Oren had slept. I hated to think he hadn’t.

It was dark still, too early for anyone to be up. I leaned my head back against the wall and thought about Oren and Haram. I sighed. No matter how hard I tried not to, they were always on the periphery of my mind. Oren was always on my mind. When I closed my eyes, I could easily imagine Haram’s beautiful artwork on his torso.

Haram had wanted me to teach him my carving technique. He had been fascinated when he noticed the pattern of chantus leaves on the inside of my left thigh while examining me, not long after he had issued his warning. Until then, I had felt awkward around him, afraid he saw me as the one who wanted to steal his vowed. But, once I started teaching him, things between us relaxed. Haram had been an eager pupil with an admirable, steady hand. The irons he had used to brand Oren were flawless. All the lines were perfect, the curves smooth, and the corners sharp. It was beautiful to see how patient Haram was when he was working. Still, it hadn’t dawned on me that it wasn’t his own skin he wanted to carve until he asked me to be present for the ritual.
